The X-Marathon adventure race features exciting paddling legs on the serene waters of Lake Macquarie, offering participants a thrilling challenge amid stunning natural scenery.
Depending on the course selected, teams will navigate one or two paddling segments, testing their endurance, coordination, and navigational skills.
Course details
Full Course and Half Course: Teams competing in the Full course and Half course categories will experience two paddling legs. These segments are designed to provide a diverse and engaging paddling experience, incorporating a mix of open water stretches and more sheltered passages.
Mini Course: Teams in the Mini course category will tackle one paddling leg. This leg, while shorter, still demands keen focus and efficient paddling techniques. It offers a taste of the full adventure paddling experience, ideal for those new to adventure racing or looking for a shorter yet challenging race.
Crafts used
Participants will paddle using a combination of Sprit CTRs and Mission sit-on-top Surge kayaks. These kayaks are selected for their stability and ease of use, making them suitable for both experienced paddlers and those newer to the sport. Importantly, all teams within each category will use the same type of kayak, ensuring fair competition. The Sprint CTRs have peddled steering, while Surge kayaks have no steering (one of the paddlers steers with their paddle).
Lake Macquarie
Lake Macquarie, known for its vast expanse and calm waters, provides an ideal setting for the paddling legs of the X-Marathon. The lake’s varying conditions, from wide-open stretches to more protected bays, offer a comprehensive paddling experience. Teams will need to navigate using natural landmarks and stay vigilant about changing wind and water conditions, adding to the challenge and excitement of the race. The Mini course teams will stay closer to the shore.
Key points for participants
Cold Water Conditions: Given that the race takes place at the end of winter, participants should be prepared for cold water temperatures. Wearing warm gear, such as neoprene bottoms, is essential to staying comfortable and maintaining performance. This is particularly important for the Full and Half course teams, who might find themselves paddling in the dark, where the cold can be even more intense.
Night Paddling: For Full and Half course teams, there is a possibility of paddling during the night. Having appropriate warm gear and ensuring visibility with headlamps and reflective gear is crucial for safety and performance.
Checkpoint location: Checkpoints could require all team members to walk from the boat a substantial distance. Therefore, it is recommended to wear neoprene socks and fully closed footwear to protect against cold and rough terrain during these transitions.
Gear Setup: The right setup of Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) is crucial. Ensure your PFD is adjusted to allow easy access to food and drinks, especially for Full and Half course teams who will need to stay hydrated and fuelled during the extended paddling legs.
Preparation and Training: Teams should practice paddling in conditions similar to those expected on Lake Macquarie, focusing on building endurance and honing their paddling techniques.
The paddling legs of the X-Marathon adventure race promise to be a highlight, combining the thrill of competition with the beauty of Lake Macquarie’s waters.
