what is expedition adventure race

Expedition adventure racing, although it is called “racing”, is not only a competition. In fact, It is more about the expedition part of the challenge, exploration and discovery of dramatic landscapes and hidden gems, battling against nature and challenges the racecourse provides, rather than the race.

You also find you help each other (in your own and other teams), finishing hand to hand. This is a true sense of expedition adventure race - to defeat tough terrain and your weak self, which may be whispering to you in the middle of the night “give up, you are too tired, you have got enough already”.

You and your team will explore and discover off the bitten path routes and places which are often impossible to visit on your own.

The course is determined by control points, provided on the map, therefore, not only fitness but also navigation and tactical abilities are critical for the successful finish.

Participants race in teams of four with Mixed teams (one team member must be opposite gender) being the Prime category. Female and Male teams race in additional categories as well.

Generally, all teams have to stay together for the entire course and visit all checkpoints in the designated order. If one person drops, all team becomes unranked. Team skills are critical,  mutual respect and effective communication are an important part of the success.

The exact course and race start are kept secret until the registration and briefing. Approximate distances and timing for each discipline are provided beforehand, but prior to race weekend, you should be ready for everything. You and your team will have to be self-sufficient for the duration of the course with only access to the additional gear provided in the Transition areas where organisers will bring your pre-packed gearboxes. Gearboxes will have to be packed and delivered to the designated location usually in the evening prior to the start.

X-Marathon is one of the Australian toughest Expedition Adventure Race and probably the toughest in under 48 hours category.

Race organisers prepare your routes and together with the team of friendly volunteers will transport your gear around the course.

The booking fee covers satellite phone hire per team, a tracking device. The course is fully checked, sometimes by multiple people, to ensure your safety.

The first team across the finish line visiting all checkpoints is the winner of the race.
